Thunder Comeback to Beat Bulldogs in Five

ANGOLA, IND. -- The Trine women's volleyball team came back from down two sets to defeat Adrian College by 3-2.

The Thunder struggled in the first two sets falling to the Bulldogs 25-20 in the first and 25-17 in the second.

In the third set things began to come together for Trine. Finding themselves tied at 10, the Thunder scored six straight points behind the service of junior Raven Hood (Monroe, Mich./Airport) who would tally an ace during the stretch, to rack up a 16-10 lead. The Bulldogs would score only one point before the Thunder started another six-point stretch, this time behind the excellent play of junior Shannon Scott (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) and freshman Sarah Toles (Kendallville/East Noble), both of whom recorded a kill and a blocking assist during the stretch. Trine would hold the 22-11 win to finish with a 25-16 set win.

In the fourth set, Adrian looked to be responding coming out to a 10-5 lead. But the Thunder responded rallying back to a 15-12 lead of their own with freshman Madison Munger (Indianapolis/Franklin Central) leading the way with two kills during the stretch. The Bulldogs would fight back to a 15 point tie, but then the Thunder pulled away with the help of excellent service by freshmen Lindsey DeCamp (New Haven/New Haven) and Emma Gaff (Hamilton/Hamilton) both of whom recorded aces during the stretch. The Thunder would pull ahead to a 22-17 lead that they would not relinquish. Trine went on to win the set with a Munger kill, 25-21.

In the fifth and deciding set Trine finished the match strongly, starting with three straight points and never relinquishing the lead. Scott would finish off the set and match for the Thunder with a kill for the 15-6 win.

Munger led the Thunder on offense with 14 kills while adding 14 digs defensively. Toles would record an impressive .429 attack percentage on her eight kills, she also added two total blocks. Scott finished with nine kills and three blocking assists. Junior Morgan Harris (Crown Point/Merrillville) would finish with the best attack percentage on the team, among attackers, with a .667.

Both Gaff and DeCamp would finish the match with a team-high three service aces. DeCamp would also tie with Hood to top the team with 17 digs apiece. Hood would finish alone on the team with 24 assists.

The Thunder will look to pick up another win tomorrow, Oct. 21 when they face St. Mary's College. The match is a crucial one for Trine as they are battling with the Belles for the fourth position in the conference and with it an invitation to the MIAA conference tournament. Trine defeated St. Mary's 3-0 earlier this year at home, but tomorrow's contest comes at St. Mary's.
