Thunder Fall to 18th-Ranked Dutch

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University women's volleyball team lost to Hope College, 3-1, in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) match Friday night in Hershey Hall.

Set one was close for the first 16 points, as the two teams were tied at eight. After that, Hope went on a five-point run to take a commanding lead, and the Dutch dominated the rest of the set, winning 25-15.

The second set was a little closer, but Hope once again dominated. After scoring four straight points to take an 11-7 lead, Hope led by three or more points for the rest of the set, coasting to a 25-18 victory.

The third set was absolutely dominated by the Thunder. Hope took an early lead in the set, but Trine stormed back to take a lead. After Hope tied it at 12, the Thunder went on an electrifying run, scoring the next nine points and forcing two Hope timeouts. Trine cruised to 25-16 third set victory.

Hope took an early lead in set number four and never looked back, winning 25-12.

Freshman Alyvia Sundheimer (Franklin / Franklin Community) led the Thunder charge with 11 kills and a .364 kill percentage. Sophomore Madison Munger (Indianapolis / Franklin Central) added six kills, and seniors Shannon Scott (Vicksburg, Mich / Vicksburg) and Morgan Harris (Crown Point / Merrillville) each chipped in five.

Defensively, sophomore Sarah Toles (Kendallville / East Noble) had four total blocks for the Thunder (one solo and three assisted).

McKenna Otto had 13 kills to lead Hope, the 18th-ranked team in the country, along with 9 block assists to lead the Dutch. She also finished with a .600 kill percentage and four aces.

Trine falls to 8-10 on the season and 1-4 in MIAA play. Hope improves to 14-4 and 3-1 in conference play. The Thunder travel to face Kalamazoo College on Wednesday, October 10. The match is slated to start at 7:00 PM.
