Thunder Sweep Belles on Senior Day

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University women's volleyball team rolled over visiting St. Mary's College with a 3-0 victory on the teams senior day.

In both of the first two sets, the Thunder got off to impressive starts taking commanding early leads and holding onto them for the win.

In the first set, the run came with the Thunder leading 4-3. During a spectacular service rotation by sophomore libero Lindsey DeCamp (New Haven / New Haven), Trine scored six straight points to take the 10-3 lead. DeCamp accounted for three of those points all by herself recording three aces during the stretch. The thunder would build their lead to as much as nine points before staving off a late comeback attempt by the Belles to take the win 25-22.

In the second set, the run came with the score tied at three. A kill by senior Shannon Scott (Vicksburg, Mich. / Vicksburg) gave the serve to sophomore Jacqueline Baughman (Lake Orion, Mich. / Lutheran Northwest) who would hold it for the next six points giving the Thunder a 10-3 lead. Trine would build the lead to ten at 24-14 and then finished off the set three points later for the 25-16 win.

In the third set, the run came later but it was just as effective. A kill by senior Morgan Harris (Crown Point / Merrillville) brought the serve back to the Thunder with a lead of 13-12. DeCamp would once again serve well for the next five points building the Trine lead to six. The Thunder would hold that lead for the 25-20 set victory behind junior Molly Smith's (Angola / Angola) final kill, giving them the match 3-0.

A strong service and blocking attack led the way for the Thunder in the match. The team finished with nine aces on the day including six from DeCamp.

In the block, five different Trine players finished the match with three or more total blocks. Sophomore Sarah Toles (Kendallville / East Noble) led the way with six. Harris and sophomore Madison Munger (Indianapolis / Franklin Central) finished tied for second with four each.

Offensively Munger finished the match with a team-high 11 kills and Scott came in second with ten. Freshman Alyvia Sundheimer (Franklin / Franklin Community) led team attackers with a .368 hitting percentage on seven kills.

Defensively senior Raven Hood (Monroe, Mich. / Airport) led the way with 18 digs. DeCamp finished second on the team with 16 digs. Senior Rhylee Beshears (Gary / Hobart) came through in some crucial moments for the Thunder finishing with nine incredible digs.

With the win, Trine finishes the regular season with an 11-11 overall record and a 3-5 record in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). They also secure a spot in the MIAA Tournament and will travel to either Albion or Alma on Tuesday, October 30 for their opening round match.
