Women's Volleyball Sweeps Capital

HANOVER, Ind. -- The Trine University women's volleyball team picked up their fifth win of the season by sweeping Capital University, 3-0, in their first match at the Hanover Invitational.

The Thunder took a quick lead in the first set pulling ahead 7-2 and then building the lead to 13-5. They would hold the lead throughout the rest of the set despite a few close calls from the opposition and took the set 25-19.

The second set was much closer with the teams pulling even with each other 13 times. Late in the set Trine found themselves down 20-17 before going on a five-point run on the back of good serving from junior Sarah Toles (Kendallville, Ind. / East Noble). The team would go on to take the set 25-21.

The Thunder faced their biggest deficit of the night during the third set of the evening going down 7-2 early and then 12-6 a short time later. The team continued to trail but cut the deficit at 18-16. They then went on an eight-point run behind the service of junior Madison Munger (Indianapolis, Ind. / Franklin Central) to take the lead and force five match-points at 24-18. It would take them three but they would win the set 25-20 ending the match with the 3-0 victory.

Munger led the way offensively in the contest coming away with 17 kills in the contest on the back of a .244 attack percentage. Toles turned in eight kills of her own and led the team with a .357 attack percentage and with three service aces. 

Junior Lindsey DeCamp (New Haven, Ind. / New Haven) turned in a 23 dig performance and classmate Jacqueline Baughman (Lake Orion, Mich. / Lutheran Northwest) led the way with 25 assists. Senior Danielle Stanichuk (Troy, Mich. / Athens) came away with three aces while adding eight digs.

Trine improves to 5-3 following the victory. They will continue their season and Hanover Invitational competition tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 14 with matches against Hanover College at 10 a.m. and Franklin College at noon.
