Volleyball Shoots Past Comets

OLIVET, Mich. -- The Trine University women's volleyball team remained undefeated in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play with a 3-1 victory over host Olivet College.

It was the Comets that fought to the largest lead of the first set taking an 11-6 lead. The Thunder would claw their way back within two, down 11-9. From that point on neither team could build more than a two-point lead and would end up in a tie five times. Trine would take the final two points of the set to take the 25-23 victory. 

The teams were tied eight times in the second set, the latest of which came at 19-19. From there Olivet pulled ahead to 24-19 and held off a late push to win 25-21 and force at least a fourth set.

The Thunder picked up the big lead in the third pulling ahead by six at 10-4. They would build that lead to ten by going up 21-11. They would hold off the late push by the Comets to take the set 25-19.

The fourth was another close set until Trine opened up the lead at 24-18. Olivet would hold on through three match-points but the Thunder came away with the 25-21 win in the set and the 3-1 win in the match.

Junior Madison Munger (Indianapolis, Ind. / Franklin Central) led the way offensively for Trine. She finished the contest with a team-high 22 kills and a .278 hitting percentage. She came in tied for team-highs with four total blocks and two service aces.

Classmate Sarah Toles (Kendallville, Ind. / East Noble) was the other person with four total blocks in the contest. Three other Thunder came away with a pair of service aces including juniors Jacqueline Baughman (Lake Orion, Mich. / Lutheran Northwest) and Lindsey DeCamp (New Haven, Ind. / New Haven) along with freshman Paris Outwater (Bronson, Mich. / Bronson).

Baughman came in with 42 assists to lead the team and DeCamp came up with 14 digs to lead the way.

The Thunder improve to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA following the victory. They will travel to face a pair of opponents tomorrow, Sept. 28. They face Illinois Tech at 2:00 p.m. and Rose-Hulman at 4:00 p.m. with both contests taking place at Rose-Hulman.
