Women's Volleyball Escapes Visiting Scots

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University women's volleyball team picked up another five-set victory, this time over Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) opponent Alma College.

The Scots came out strong in the match, leading the first set from start to finish. Their biggest lead came at 16-7 and they would finish off the win with the score of 25-18. The script flipped in the second set with the Thunder leading from start to finish and coming away with their own 25-18 win.

Tied at a set apiece the Thunder came out in the third and picked up a lead again. This time it was short-lived as Alma came back in the set. The teams would trade leads for a stretch and then the Thunder pulled ahead and build a comfortable 21-12 lead before scraping their way to a 25-21 victory.

The fourth set saw the two teams locked in a deadlock throughout much of the set until Alma took the final three points of the contest to win the set and force a fifth deciding frame with a score of 25-22.

After losing the first point of the set, the Thunder would take the lead for the final time at 3-2. The team would stave off a few advances by the Scots but never relinquished the lead and came away with a 15-11 victory to win the set and the match.

Junior Sarah Toles (Kendallville, Ind. / East Noble) led the way offensively for Trine finishing the contest with 22 kills and an impressive .356 hitting percentage. She also added three total blocks to come in second on that category.

Freshman Breanna Small (Indianapolis, Ind. / Beech Grove) turned in an even more efficient night coming up with 11 kills with a .500 hitting percentage. She finished tied for first on the team with four total blocks including two solos.

Junior Madison Munger (Indianapolis, Ind. / Franklin Central) tied with Toles by turning in 22 kills as well. Classmate Lindsey DeCamp (New Haven, Ind. / New Haven) led the way with 28 digs, while Jacqueline Baughman (Lake Orion, Mich. / Lutheran Northwest) finished the contest with a team-high 59 assists along with four total blocks.

Trine improves to 12-6 overall and 3-0 in MIAA competition. They will travel to face nationally-ranked Calvin University in their next match, which will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 6:30 p.m.
