Women's Volleyball Squashes Visiting Kalamazoo

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University women's volleyball team came up with a three-set sweep of visiting Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Associaton (MIAA) opponent Kalamazoo College.

After trading points through the first part of the set, the Thunder build a commanding 14-7 lead on the back of a 10-1 run. They would never again relinquish the lead and took the set by the score of 25-16.

In the second set, Trine built a 14-10 lead behind a 5-1 run in the middle portion of the frame. The Thunder went on another strong run building their lead to 19-13. After letting the Hornets pull back within three at 19-16, Trine finished off the set with a 6-1 run for the final score of 25-17.

The third set saw the Thunder struggle early with Kalamazoo coming out to a 6-2 lead behind some strong work from the service line. Trine responded with their own good service work with junior Madison Munger (Indianapolis, Ind. / Franklin Central) leading the team to five straight points to take a 7-6 lead. Trine continued to build their lead and looked to be set to take the match victory when they took a 24-20 lead. But four straight points from Kalamazoo put them on the back foot. The Thunder recovered and took the set 26-24 and the match 3-0.

Munger led Trine in two categories with 16 kills and 17 digs in the contest. Classmate Becca Moon (Charlevoix, Mich. / Charlevoix) also turned in a strong offensive performance coming in second on the team with nine kills in the match.

The key to victory for the Thunder though was junior Jacqueline Baughman (Lake Orion, Mich. / Lutheran Northwest). She led the team with 37 assists while also came away with nine kills on a .500 hitting percentage. Baughman also added a service ace, two blocks and six digs in the contest.

Trine improves to 13-8 overall and 4-2 in MIAA competition. They continue their season by traveling to Naperville, Ill. for the North Central Tournament this weekend. Their next match comes against Nebraska Wesleyan on Friday, October 18 at 6:00 p.m.
