ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University women's volleyball team came back from two deficits to come up with a 3-2 victory over visiting Albion College which propels the team into a tie for third in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) standings.
The Britons came out tough in the match, building a late lead in the first set and taking the win 25-18. The Thunder came up with a resounding response in the second set building a commanding 14-4 lead. They then staved off a late rally by Albion to win the set 25-16.
Trine took another early lead in the third building it to 5-1. From their the Britons 6-0 run to take back the lead. The second run of 5-0 later in the set gave Albion a commanding 19-11 lead and they went on to win 25-15.
The fourth set saw the two teams tied at three. A kill brought junior Jacqueline Baughman (Lake Orion, Mich. / Lutheran Northwest) to the service line. While there she led the team to seven straight points including three straight aces. The Thunder continued to lead in the set, but the Britons pulled back within one at 20-19. Trine once again responded taking the final five points of the set to force a deciding stanza.
The Thunder continued their dominance into the final set, going up 5-3 and sending junior Lindsey DeCamp (New Haven, Ind. / New Haven) to the service line where she led the team on a nine-point run giving them a 13-3 lead. Trine finished off the match just a few points later with a score of 15-4.
Junior Madison Munger (Indianapolis, Ind. / Franklin Central) led the way offensively for the Thunder finishing the contest with 24 kills and a .174 hitting percentage. She also added an ace and 13 digs.
Freshman Paris Outwater (Bronson, Mich. / Bronson) led Trine with 25 digs. Classmate Breanna Small (Indianapolis, Ind. / Beech Grove) tallied a team-high five blocks.
Baughman paced the team in two categories, leading the way with 44 assists and four service aces. She also added six kills on a .286 hitting percentage. The assists add to her career total which surpassed 1000 earlier this season, they also give her 1002 total assists so far this season.
The Thunder improve to 17-11 overall and 5-2 in the MIAA following the victory. The win guarantees Trine at least fourth place in the MIAA, securing a home quarterfinal matchup next week on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
The team will finish off their regular season, and look to secure the outright third-place finish with a win, on Friday, Nov. 1 when they travel to face Saint Mary's College. The match is set to start at 7 p.m.
