Women's Volleyball Stunned by Alma Comeback

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University women's volleyball team took a 2-1 lead in the match but were stunned by in the fourth and fifth sets falling 3-2 to visiting Alma College in the opening round of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Volleyball Tournament.

The Thunder started the match strongly in the first set, taking the lead at 5-6 and never relinquishing it. Sophomore Paris Outwater (Bronson, Mich. / Bronson) led the way for the team with superior service, in her two times up to the line she gave the team a 5-0 run and a 4-0 run. Trine took the set 25-17.

The second set saw both teams close through the majority of the frame, but the Scots went on a 5-2 run in the final moments to take the set 25-23. After dropping the first two points of the third set the Thunder stormed out to an 8-2 lead, on the back of sophomore Jillian Hannah's (Cygnet, Ohio / Clarkston) first service. The team would stave off a comeback attempt and hold onto the lead to close out the set at 25-17.

Alma dominated the fourth set, scoring the first nine points before cruising to a 25-15 victory. They would carry the momentum into the final set building a 10-3 lead and eventually staving off the Thunder attempt to close the gap and winning the set 15-11 and the match 3-2.

Six different Trine student-athletes recorded an ace in the contest as the team totaled 12. Outwater was joined by senior Lindsey DeCamp (New Haven, Ind. / New Haven) in leading the way with three apiece. Seniors Sarah Toles (Kendallville, Ind. / East Noble) and Jacqueline Baughman (Lake Orion, Mich. / Lutheran Northwest) each finished with a pair. 

Senior Madison Munger (Indianapolis, Ind. / Franklin Central) led the team in kills as she recorded 19 in the contest. Toles added 13 to finish second on the team. Baughman led the way with 43 assists and 19 digs.

The team falls to 7-5 overall following the loss. They will advance into the consolation half of the bracket where they will await news of their next opponent.
