Trine's Season Comes to a Close in MIAA Semifinals

HOLLAND, Mich. – The fourth-seeded Trine University women's volleyball team was ousted from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament in the Semifinal round at the hands of the top seed, Hope College, 3-0 on Friday night.

Trine wraps up play in the 2021 season with a record of 17-16 while the Flying Dutch advance to the MIAA Finals to take on the number two seed, Calvin University.

An early 8-0 run in the first set allowed Hope to jump ahead early 11-3. The Flying Dutch were able to throw down 18 kills and limited the Thunder to just three in a 25-14 win. Cassidy Victor [Fraser, Mich. / Fraser] was able to notch two kills in the first set.

Victor picked up where she left off in the first with a kill to start the second set and a five-point swing by Trine was led with Olivia Jolliffe [Warren, Mich. / Cousino] serving. An ace highlighted a 6-2 advantage for the Thunder early on. Francesca Queary [Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow] secured three consecutive Trine points on kills to keep the visitors in front, but the lead did not last.

A 7-1 scoring spree allowed Hope to take their first lead of the set, but Samantha Carlin [Celina, Ohio / Celina], who received her All-MIAA award prior to today's contest as well as senior setter Jacqueline Baughman [Lake Orion, Mich. / Lutheran Northwest], tied it up at 16 with an ace. Queary marked three more kills late in the set, but the Flying Dutch pulled away to a 25-19 victory.

Baughman and Chloe Behm [Albion, Ind. / Central Noble] got in the scoring column early in the third set, with the Thunder looking like they had some late life. Unfortunately for Trine, Hope rattled off 10 points in a row and took a commanding 20-12 edge. Madison Dominick [Swartz Creek, Mich. / Swartz Creek] entered to try to stop the bleeding, but was unable to lead a comeback effort and the Flying Dutch closed the match with a 25-16 set three win.

Queary had a team-high eight kills, and finished the season third on the team in kills with 145. Baughman recorded nine assists in the match, and Carlin chipped in with five. Both All-MIAA representatives also were in double figures with digs. Carlin had 16 and Baughman, 10.

Baughman ends her career with 2,631 assists, third all-time in program history during the NCAA DIII era. The 2021 season also marked her second with over 1,000 assists. With 122 aces, she also finds herself in fourth since joining the NCAA.

Jolliffe's 63 service aces during the 2021 campaign ties her for the most in a single season with Lindsey DeCamp in 2019. As a team, the Thunder were able to tie the DIII program record for most in a season with 256. Carlin's 16 digs put her over the edge for the most in a single season at 578 (NCAA DIII era).
