Thunder Women Place Fifth in MIAA Jamboree

ALMA, Mich. -- The Trine women's cross country team placed fifth in the MIAA Jamboree, hosted by Alma College at Pine River Country Club.

The performance of the top five Thunder runners earned the team 134 points. Kelsey Ortiz (Swanton, Ohio / Anthony Wayne) led the way with a 21st-place finish to earn Trine 18 points. Ortiz crossed the finish line in 23:26.9, her best-ever time in a MIAA race and a new personal-best on a 6K course.

Kyla Binfet (West Yellowstone, Mont. / West Yellowstone) was the second Thunder runner to cross the finish line. The junior earned the team 20 points with her performance. She finished in a personal-best 23:28.2.

Samantha Stensland (Fishers, Ind. / Hamilton Southeastern), Lacie Piekarski (Spring Lake, Mich. / Spring Lake) and Hannah Blystone (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) rounded out Trine's top five. Stensland scored the Thunder 28 points with her peformance, while Piekarski and Blystone notched 32 and 36 points respectively.

The results of the MIAA Jamboree count one-third towards the final MIAA standings. The MIAA Championship will be held Saturday, Oct. 29 at Albion College.

Trine's next race will come Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Louisville Cross Country Classic, one of the largest cross country meets in the nation.
