Thunder Women Place 12th in Inter-Regional Rumble

OBERLIN, Ohio -- The Trine women's cross country team placed 12th in the Inter-Regional Rumble, hosted by Oberlin College.

Thunder runners combined to score the team 334 points. The varsity women's 6K race was made up of 255 runners representing 29 teams. Trine runners combined to average a time of 23:33 on the course. The Thunder placed second among four MIAA teams competing in the race.

Kyla Binfet (West Yellowstone, Mont. / West Yellowstone) led all Trine runners with a 29th-place finish. The junior ran a career-best time of 22:46.4, beating her previous-best by 26 seconds. Binfet averaged a 6:06.3 mile.

Kelsey Ortiz (Swanton, Ohio / Anthony Wayne) and Samantha Stensland (Fishers, Ind. / Hamilton Southeastern) earned the next two spots among Thunder runners, finishing one second apart. Ortiz crossed the finish line in 23:07.8, a personal-best. Stensland crushed her pervious-career best, setting a new top mark by 57 seconds.

Hannah Blystone (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) and Heather Richardson (Fort Wayne, Ind. / South Side) rounded out Trine's top five, each with personal-best times. Blystone crossed the finish line in 24:11.7, while Richardson set a new career-best mark by 45 seconds with a time of 24:29.6.

Lacie Piekarski (Spring Lake, Mich. / Spring Lake) returned to competition and turned in a time of 24:43.7.

The Inter-Regional Rumble was Trine's final tune-up before the MIAA Championships. The Thunder will be looking to move up from its fifth-place finish in the MIAA Jamboree, which counts one-third towards the final conference standings.

The MIAA Women's Cross Country Championship race will take place Saturday, Oct. 29 at 11 a.m. on the campus of Albion College.
