ANGOLA, IND.—Trine Thunder Athletics has announced a week of special events for NCAA Division III Week, which will be held Apr. 7-13.
Numerous special events will be held throughout the week to go along with a full athletics schedule that sees the Thunder women’s tennis, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, baseball and softball teams all in action at home. Division III Week is a positive opportunity for all individuals associated with Division III to observe and celebrate the impact of athletics and of student-athletes on campus and in the surrounding community. In addition to competing in their respective sports, Trine student-athletes excel in the classroom with a cumulative 3.09 GPA- which matches the cumulative GPA of the entire student body. Trine Thunder Athletics welcomes the community to participate in events on and off-campus throughout the week.
Events at Trine kick off Monday, Apr. 7 with the Athletic Integration Seminar. As part of an NCAA-funded initiative, the member schools of the MIAA are conducting symposia on their respective campuses to discuss the relationship between athletics and academics. Trine students, student-athletes, coaches, and members of the faculty and administration will meet to discuss the integration of athletics into the academic mission and campus life at Trine University.
The women’s tennis team will host also host Olivet in a MIAA match Monday afternoon at 4 p.m. The team features reigning-MIAA Player of the Week Jessica Huhnke.
Tuesday will see Trine student-athletes venture into the community as part of Athlete Community Day. Thunder student-athletes will be performing public services around the Angola community all day. The Trine Volleyball team will also host the Youth Volleyball Experience camp for local youth from 6-8 p.m. in Hershey Hall. The team will also be hosting the same event Thursday from 6-8 p.m.
Capping off Tuesday’s action will be a women’s lacrosse game between Trine and Alma at 4:00 p.m. The Thunder are currently 1-3 on the season and feature reigning-MIAA Defensive Player of the Week Grace Garrett.
Wednesday night will feature a non-conference men’s lacrosse game against Wilmington at 7:00 p.m. Following the game will be a cook-out with CCH at 9:45 p.m. Also on tap for Wednesday is Take Back the Night, an event to raise awareness for sexual assault. The event gets underway at 6:30 p.m.
Student-athletes will perform clean-up duties around campus on Thursday and will wear their uniforms to class as part of All-Athlete Uniform Day. Trine is home to over 600 student-athletes. The Student-Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) will also be sponsoring a dodgeball tournament at 6:00 p.m. Students interested in signing up for dodgeball should sign up in the University Center between Monday and Wednesday.
Friday is Thunder Nation T-Gear Friday. Students, faculty, staff and members of the community are encouraged sport Trine athletic gear in support of their favorite Trine teams. SAAC will also be sponsoring a Capture the Flag game. Students interested in participating should sign up in the University Center.
SAAC/Student Life Services will be sponsoring a cook-out at 1:00 p.m. Saturday in conjunction with the day’s athletic events. The baseball team will host Olivet at Jannen Field, while softball will take on Adrian. Women’s tennis is in action against Albion. The softball team is currently ranked sixth in the nation and is riding a 15-game winning-streak, while the baseball team is once again in the hunt for a MIAA-Playoff berth.
Capping off the week’s events will be the Intramural Golf Outing and a women’s tennis match against Kalamazoo on Sunday.
Fans are encouraged to interact with the NCAA Division III Twitter and Facebook pages during the week. For each new Facebook “like” or Twitter follower, NCAA Division III will make a donation to Special Olympics.
Division III is the NCAA’s largest division, with 448 member institutions making up 40 percent of the NCAA’s total membership. Over 180,000 student-athletes compete as members of Division III athletic teams. On average, Division III institutions sponsor 18 sports.
Student-athletes do not receive athletic scholarships at the Division III level. NCAA Division III promotes athletic experience, academic accomplishment and leadership/community involvement as part of its founding principles.
Located in Angola, Ind. Trine University is home to over 600 student-athletes who compete in 21 varsity sports.
