AUBURNDALE, Fla.—The Trine baseball team dropped a 17-10 game to Mt. St. Joseph on Wednesday afternoon at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
Trine moves to 3-2 overall this season, while Mt. St. Joseph improved to 4-5.
Drew Palmer (Hartford, Wisc./Hartford Union) recorded his second home run of the season and totaled four RBI on the day. Colton Conn (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indiana Hall) notched three hits, while Chase Hall (Orleans, Ind./Orleans) had two and drove in three runs. Jacob Stauffer (Elhart, Ind./Concord) took the loss in relief for the Thunder.
The Lions were led by Kyree Hawkins with four hits and four RBI. Four other players recorded two hits apiece, including Nick Browning and Luke Bowman who each had three RBI. Ben Frizzell earned the win on the mound.
Mt. St. Joseph drove in three runs in the second and followed with two in the third to take the lead. Conn scored Trine's first run in the bottom of the third when he ran home off a wild pitch. The Thunder took the lead in the bottom of the fourth after Hall singled to right field and drove in two runs, and Palmer followed with a three-run homer to right field.
Each team grabbed a run in the fifth inning, and the Lions seized back their lead in the sixth driving in three runners. Trine deadlocked the game at 10 all in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded, Zachary Schulte (Sterling Heights, Mich./Warren Cousino) took ball four to score a run, and Palmer hit a sac fly to left field to drive in a second.
Mt. St. Joseph's Browning homered over the left field fence in the top of the eighth driving in the game-winning runs. The Lions scored five runs in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach.
Trine will play a doubleheader against Greenville on Thursday in Leesburg, Fla. Game one begins at 10 a.m.
