ANGOLA, IND. -- Trine University junior baseball player A.J. Mitchell (Emmett, Mich./Kellogg CC) has been named this week's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association "Position Player of the Week."
The Thunder began their 2020 season this past weekend with three games played at Centre College in Danville, Ky. Trine played a pair of nine inning games on Friday starting with a matchup against Hanover College and then took on host Centre. Trine fell to Hanover in the season opener, 9-3, then handed Centre its first loss of its season with a 9-3 victory against the Colonels. On Sunday, Trine and Centre met again, but this time it was Centre who came away with the win, by a final of 14-4 in seven innings.
Mitchell had a solid first weekend batting .545 with a team-high six hits in 11 attempts at the plate that included one double. He also scored three runs. Defensively, Mitchell had 10 putouts and finished with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in three starts at first base.
Trine will return to action on Sunday, Mar. 1 with a doubleheader against Union (N.Y.) College to start off its annual spring trip to Florida. The first game of the twinbill is scheduled to 11:30 a.m. at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale, Fla.
