FREELAND, MICH.-- Trine seniors Tyler Guzy and Joel Lopshire each earned recognition as MIAA Players of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Guzy (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) earned recongition as MIAA Defensive Player of the Week, while Lopshire (Angola, Ind./Angola) earned distinction as MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week. Both players played a key role in Saturday's 26-23 double-overtime victory over Alma on Homecoming at Shive Field and Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium. Guzy provided big plays all afternoon for the Thunder defense, picking off two passes, forcing a fumble, and recovering another. Lopshire connected on two field goals, including the game-winner in double-overtime to send Trine home with the victory.
Guzy forced and recovered fumbles to stall Alma drives in Trine territory in the first half. His first of two interceptions came deep in Scot territory, and immediately set up a Thunder touchdown on the ensuing play. His final pick of the day came on fourth-down on Alma's possession of the second-overtime. The senior safety also added eight tackles and a pass break-up on the afternoon.
Lopshire connected on both of his field-goal attempts, including the game-winner in the second-OT. Both field goal makes came from 25 yards. The Angola-native also connected on both of his extra-point attempts. Lopshire's second make was the first game-winning overtime field goal by a Trine kicker since 2007.
Trine is off to a 3-1 start, and are 1-0 in MIAA play. The Thunder travel up to Olivet to face the 3-1 Comets this Saturday, Oct. 11. Olivet opened MIAA play with a 28-21 victory over Adrian this past Saturday.
