ANGOLA, IND. -- Trine University senior football player Jeffery Barnett (Fremont, Ohio/Ross) has been selected this week's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association "Player of the Week" on special teams for his individual effort this past weekend against Albion (Mich.) College.
Barnett helped the Thunder post a 59-42 win against the Britons on Saturday (Oct. 27) that also allowed Trine to move ahead to the top spot in the MIAA standings.
In the game, Barnett finished with 177 kick return yards that included a 92-yard return for a touchdown. He also had another kick return for TD in the game, but was called back because of a Trine penalty. The touchdown return was his second of the season which gives him the single-season school record. He averaged 35.4 yards per return with attempts of 35, 25, 14, 11 and 92 yards.
In addition to his impressive day on special teams, Barnett was also one of two wide receivers to have 100 or more yards receiving. He finished with three receptions for 108 yards and a TD that came on a 76-yard completion on the first play of the second quarter. It marked the first time since the 2016 season that a pair of wideouts had at least 100 yards receiving that also included Barnett as part of the 100-yard receiving duo.
Trine will host its final regular-season home game on Saturday, Nov. 3 when it hosts Adrian (Mich.) College at Zollner Stadium. It will be senior day with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
