ANGOLA, IND. -- Two members of the Trine University men's basketball team have been named All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association in seniors Langston Johnson (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Central) and Maurice Hunter (Monroe, Mich./Monroe).
Langston Johnson was a first-team pick and Hunter garnered second-team accolades. In the past nine years, Langston Johnson is the eighth player to earn first-team All-MIAA honors. As a team, the Thunder have finished in the top four in the conference in the last nine years, the only team during that span to do so.
In 2019-20, Langston Johnson leads the team in scoring at 18.1 points per game and shoots 43.4 percent (173-of-399). He is second in both three-pointers made (49) and attempts (141) for a 34.8 shot percentage. In addition, he leads the team in free-throws with 58 made attempts in 79 total shots (73.4 percent). Langston Johnson has scored in double figures in all but two games played with nine games of 20 or more points and three games of 30 or more points that included a career-high 38-point effort against Loras (Iowa) College. Earlier in the season, he became the 46th player in school history to score 1,000 points or more, and sixth player in the past nine seasons to accomplish the feat, and enters MIAA Tournament with 1,254 career points which rank 23rd on the all-time scoring list.
In addition to his scoring statistics. Langston Johnson has averaged 4.2 rebounds per game and is among the team leaders in assists (91) and steals (22).
Among conference opponents, he ranks in the top-10 in several statistical categories including: scoring (7th - 18.1 ppg), steals (9th - 22), assists (5th - 91), three-pointers made (9th - 49) and total field goals made (3rd - 173).
Maurice Hunter earned All-Conference honors for the second time in his career (second-team All-MIAA in 2017-18) and is currently second on the team in scoring this season at 12.3 ppg. Hunter is among the team leaders in shooting percentage at 51.2 percent. After missing multiple games early in the season due to injury, he has scored in double figures in 13 games with a season-high 26 points in the second matchup of the year against Alma. Additionally, Hunter has recorded three double-doubles this year and now has 12 for his career at Trine.
Hunter leads the team in rebounding at 5.4 rpg and blocked shots with 22. He has also tallied 22 assists and five steals.
In the conference, Hunter is currently fourth overall in blocks (22) and his 51.2 field goal percentage ranks as the ninth best.
Hunter transferred to Trine from Heidelberg after the 2015-16 season and has totaled 931 career points combined as well as 545 rebounds and 112 blocks coming into MIAA Tournament play.
Trine will make its ninth straight appearance in the MIAA Tournament that begins tonight (Tuesday, Feb. 25). The Thunder will be the fourth seed and will host fifth seed Alma (Mich.) College at the MTI Center starting at 7 p.m.
