HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – Brent Cox of the Trine University men's basketball team was named Athlete of the Week for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) for the second time this season. It is the fifth week of the 2022-23 campaign that a Thunder men's basketball player has been honored by the conference.
The senior forward from Kendallville, Indiana helped Trine to two home victories to wrap up the regular season with a 22-3 record (12-2 in MIAA play). The team defeated Kalamazoo College 72-45 on Wednesday night and topped Adrian College by a score of 86-48. The Thunder clinched the number two seed going into the MIAA Tournament and received a first-round bye.
Cox averaged 20.0 points per game last week, including a career-high 26 points on senior day versus the Bulldogs. He shot 11-of-18 from the field, knocked down 3-of-4 attempts from beyond the arc and grabbed six rebounds to conclude the regular season. His stat line read 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals against the Hornets.
In the MIAA, Cox is third in scoring at 17.4 points per game and is 13th in field goal percentage at 45.3%. He scored in double figures in 24 of the 25 regular season matchups this season.
The Thunder will compete in the MIAA Tournament Semifinal Round on Friday, February 24 at 5:30 p.m. on the campus of Calvin University. Their opponent will be decided in the Hope College versus Adrian College First Round game on Wednesday, February 22.
