ANGOLA, IND. -- The Trine's men golf team won the Ken Venturi Invitational at its own Zollner Golf Course.
The day's format varied from normal invitational play. Each school had three pairs that turned in a score. Holes one to six were played as a scramble, holes seven to 12 better ball and holes 13 to 18 alternate shot.
The Thunder finished with a team score of 201. Grace College and Trine's second team both finished in second with team scores of 212.
Sophomores Grant Brettnacher (Brookton/Harrison) and Todd Mieske (Owosso, Mich./Owosso) turned in Trine's top score of 66. The pair's score also was tied for best in the invitational, along with Hogan Samples and Trevor Spagnoletti of Cleary University. Also competing for the Thunder, Grant McKay (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) and Cameron Ruge (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) finished with 67. Joe LeSueur (Northfield, Ohio/Trinity) and Nick Knowlton (Bridgman, Mich./Bridgman) turned in a 68.
Trine's second team included Austin Miller (Kokomo/Northwestern) and Nicklaus Jasiak (Schoolcraft, Mich./Schoolcraft) shooting 69. Carlos Coeto (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) and Jeffrey Uhls (Shelbyville/Shelbyville) shot 71. Spencer Graf (Granger/Penn) and Matthew Beeman (Longansport/Logansport) finished with a 72.
The team will next compete at the first MIAA Jamboree of the season, which is hosted by Adrian College at the Lenawee Country Club. The event takes place on Tuesday, Sept. 19, with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m.
