DALY CITY, Calif. -- Trine University men's golfer Grant McKay (Las Vegas, Nev. / Coronado) competed in a U.S. Open sectional qualifier for the first time in his career, marking a historic step for the golfer, but came up short of moving on to the main event.
The sophomore started the grueling 36-hole day off well coming away with four birdies in his first round to finish with a score of 74. He would go on to struggle in the second round and would ultimately fall short of qualifying for the U.S. Open.
McKay earned a spot at the sectional by posting an impressive score of 67 at the local qualifier hosted by the South Bend Country Club. During last season's collegiate competition McKay averaged a Trine team-low 73.6 strokes and was named to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) all-conference second team.
