ALMA, MICH. -- The Trine University men's golf team continued to distance itself as one of the top teams in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association by claiming its second conference event of the fall season by finishing first in the MIAA Jamboree #2 hosted by Alma (Mich.) College at Pine River Country Club in Alma, Mich.
Trine finished 14 strokes ahead of its nearest opponent and was the only team to finish with a combined score under 300 at 291 strokes. Calvin (Mich.) College was second with 305 strokes and Hope (Mich.) College was third at 307 strokes.
Individually, all five team eligible scorers finished in the top-10, including posting the top two overall scores with senior Nick Knowlton (Bridgman, MIch./Bridgman) firing a two-under par (70 strokes) and finished as medalist in his second-straight MIAA event. Fellow senior Grant Brettnacher (Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) placed second overall and shot an even par 72 strokes.
Freshman Mitch Lowney (Fenton, Mich./Clarkston Everest) posted a top-five score with 74 strokes which was good enough to put him in a tie for fourth. Junior Cameron Ruge (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) finished in sole possession of ninth place with a round of 75 strokes.
Senior Carlos Coeto (Bernardo, Mexico) shot a 76 and was tied for 10th place to round out the individual team scores.
Also making the trip up north was senior Todd Mieske (Owosso, Mich./Owosso) who competed as an individual and posted a score of 74 strokes and was part of the tie with teammate Lowney for fourth place among the field.
Trine will look to continue its impressive play when it travels to compete in the Lourdes Invitational hosted by Lourdes (Ohio) University on Wednesday, Sept. 25. The single-round tournament will be held at Legacy Golf Course in Ottawa Lake, Mich. with a start time of 9 a.m.
