ANGOLA, Ind. -- A four-goal third period lifted the Trine University men's hockey team to a 5-1 victory over visiting Lawrence University.
The Thunder fell behind in the first period of the contest as the Vikings came away with the first goal of the contest in the 16th minute of the opening stanza. They would hold the 1-0 lead for the rest of the period and most of the second.
In the 18th minute of the second period, Trine put their mark on the scoreboard by taking advantage of a power-play opportunity. Freshman forward Garrett Hallford (McKinney, Texas) recorded the goal, the first of his career. Both freshman Jon Doyle (Livonia, Mich.) and junior Henry Hearon recorded assists on the goal. The teams entered the second intermission tied at one goal.
But the Thunder put all doubt out of the contest in the third by scoring four goals in ten minutes. Four different members of the team came away with goals in the period. Freshman forward William Casey (Eagle River, Alaska) recorded the team's second goal which would be the game-winner. Freshman Brandon Krumpschmid (Grand Rapids, Mich.), sophomore Alex Johanson (Skokie, Ill.) and sophomore Blake Robertson (South Lyon, Mich.) added the other three to give the team the final lead of 5-1.
The final score bore out the offensive dominance of the Thunder in the contest as the team outshot the Vikings by 52-14 over the course of the game.
Junior Brett Young (Livonia, Mich.) got the start in net for Trine and finished with 13 saves.
The Thunder improve to 1-2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) following the victory. They will host defending national champions St. Norbert College on Friday, Nov. 9 in their next game. The contest is set to start at 7 p.m.
