HANCOCK, Mich. -- A offense filled third period was too much for the Trine University men's hockey team as they fell to hosting Finlandia University by the score of 3-1.
The game started with both teams flexing their defensive muscles as the game remained scoreless through the first two periods. The Thunder were outshot in those periods by 20-15.
In the third, the defense was set aside as the two teams combined for four goals. The Lions opened the scoring with three straight, starting in the fourth minute and ending in the 18th minute.
Trine finally put themselves on the scoreboard at the 19-minute mark with a goal from sophomore Michael Meisenbacher (Basking Ridge, N.J.) with assists coming from freshmen Gianni Vitali (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Garrett Hallford (McKinney, Texas).
The goal was their lone of the contest and they finished the game down 3-1.
Junior Brett Young (Livonia, Mich.) got the start in net for the Thunder and finished the contest with 31 saves.
Trine falls to 8-10-2 overall and 4-8-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play following the loss. They will take the ice again tomorrow when they face nationally-ranked St. Norbert College at 7 p.m. CST.
