ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University men's hockey team entered the first intermission down 1-0, but still came away with an 8-2 victory over visiting Concordia University Wisconsin.
The lone goal of the first was a power-play goal for the Falcons giving them the 1-0 lead heading into the second period.
The Thunder responded in impressive fashion in the second period. Over a two-minute span starting just over four minutes into the period the team would record three goals to take the lead. The first goal came from junior Blake Robertson (South Lyon, Mich.) with assists from classmates Carmine Taffo (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Chris Garrity (Stafford, Va.).
Sophomore Garrett Hallford (McKinney, Texas) gave Trine the lead under a minute later with help from freshmen Brett Piper (Cartier, Manitoba) and Justin Meers (St. Charles, Mo.).
The final goal in the streak started with freshman Frank Trazzera (Keller, Texas) popping the puck out from along the boards into the neutral zone. From there freshman Brendan Prappas (West Bloomfield, Mich.) took the puck around the back of the opposition's goal before passing it to a trailing Blake Robertson who converted for the goal. Robertson's second goal of the night would end up being the game-winner.
The Thunder added another goal in the final minutes of the second to enter the second break up 4-1.
A flurry of goals in the final four minutes of the contest, four for the Thunder and one for the Falcons, gave the game its final 8-2 score.
Blake Robertson led the team ending the game with three points including two goals and an assist. The six-goal deficit is Trine's largest victory in program history it is also the first time the team has scored eight goals in a contest.
Senior Brett Young (Livonia, Mich.) got the start in net for the Thunder and finished the game with 22 saves.
Trine improves to 7-7 overall and 5-4 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play following the victory. They will face off with the Falcons again tomorrow, Saturday, January 11. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
