LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Trine University men's hockey team picked up a win in their first-ever Harris Cup Playoff game coming back to defeat Lake Forest College 5-4 in overtime.
The two teams traded goals in the first period to start the second period tied 1-1. The Thunder goal was scored by freshman Brendan Prappas (West Bloomfield, Mich.) his ninth of the season. Junior Carmine Taffo (Staten Island, N.Y.) and sophomore William Casey (Eagle River, Alaska) added assists on the goal.
The second period saw the Foresters take a 3-1 lead on the back of two goals.
Trine started the scoring in the third period with a power-play goal in the sixth minute. Sophomore Garrett Hallford (McKinney, Texas) came up with the goal, pulling the team back within one at 3-2. Prappas and sophomore Hunter Payment (Monroe, Mich.) added assists.
Lake Forest responded just a minute later to pull back to a two-goal lead.
Payment brought the team back within one with a goal of his own in the 12th minute of the period. Hallford and junior Corey Robertson (South Lyon, Mich.) added assists on the power-play goal.
The Thunder then took the lead in the 19th minute of the period behind Prappas's second goal and third point of the contest. Payment added his third point of the game with an assist and freshman Brett Piper (Cartier Manitoba) added another.
Neither team scored in the final minute of play and the teams entered overtime in a 4-4 tie.
Just over a minute into the extra period, the Thunder came up with the game-winning goal. Freshman Frank Trazzera (Keller, Texas) came up with the goal, his second game-winner of the season. Hallford and freshman Justin Meers (St. Charles, Mo.) added assists.
The team will face off with Lake Forest again tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 22. With a win or tie, the Thunder will advance to the semi-finals of the Harris Cup Playoffs. With a loss, the two teams will face off in a 20-minute mini-game to decide who will advance. Opening puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST.
