LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Trine University men's hockey team lost the second game of their Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Harris Cup Quarterfinals series against Lake Forest College by the score of 3-1, but they will advance to the next round on the back of a 1-0 win in the tiebreaking minigame.
Both teams started the day scoreless through 20 minutes of hockey ending the first period tied at zero. In the second the Foresters tallied a pair of goals to take a 2-0 lead, both coming in the final six minutes of the stanza.
The team would stretch their lead to three in the 12th minute of the third period.
The Thunder came up with their lone goal of the contest in the 15th minute of the final period. Freshman Frank Trazzera (Keller, Texas) came up with the goal with classmate Brendan Prappas (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and senior Henry Hearon (Chicago, Ill.) adding assists.
Senior Brett Young (Livonia, Mich.) finished the contest with 40 saves despite the loss.
With the two-game series now split at a win each, the two teams headed to a 20-minute mini-game to decide who would advance to the next round of the Harris Cup Playoffs.
A stalemate ensued for the first ten minutes of play in the abbreviated contest. Then sophomore Garrett Hallford (McKinney, Texas) came up big with an unassisted goal to give Trine the 1-0 lead.
The Thunder were able to hold on to that lead for the rest of the contest, with a huge penalty kill in the final minutes highlighting the defensive effort as the team picked up the 1-0 win.
The team exits the weekend with a 13-11-3 overall record. They will travel to face Adrian College in a lone semi-final contest next Saturday, Feb. 29. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
