ANGOLA, Ind.-- Trine was defeated by Baldwin Wallace, 7-6 in a hard-fought double-overtime marathon of a game Wednesday night in Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium.
After the two teams played to a draw through regulation and the first overtime, Brett Librock scored 14 seconds into the second-OT on the man-advantage to give the Yellow Jackets the victory. Each team fought back from two-goal deficits to take leads in the game. Vinny Carter scored three goals and notched two assists to lead Baldwin Wallace. Chris Ward (Oak Lawn, Ill./St. Rita), Paul Carlquist (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) and G.T. Youpel (Chicago Ridge, Ill./St. Rita) each scored two goals to lead the Thunder. Trine falls to 2-4 overall. The Yellow Jackets remained unbeaten at 5-0.
Baldwin Wallace held a 44-31 edge in shots on goal and converted 2-of-4 extra-man opportunities. Trine held a 38-35 edge in ground balls and won 10-of-17 face-offs.
Thunder goalkeepers Ryan Nelson (Stillwater, Minn./Mahotmedi Senior) and Travis Lores (Kildeer, Ill./Lake Zurich) combined to make 13 saves in a stout effort in net. Mike Dizonno turned away 11 shots for the Yellow Jackets. Each team was credited with 12 caused turnovers.
The Yellow Jackets controlled the action for much of the first half to build a 3-1 lead. Carson scored twice, while Andrew Spicher added the first of his two goals. Youpel scored an unassisted tally to get the Thunder on the board.
Trine appeared to take control with a four-goal third quarter. Youpel opened the scoring in the half off a pass from Jake Ahearn (Naperville, Ill./Naperville), before Ward added back-to-back tallies to give the Thunder a 4-3 lead. Carlquist capped off the scoring in the quarter with an unassisted tally to make the score 5-3.
BW scored the first three goals of the fourth over a span of 4:39 of playing time. Spicher score off a feed from Carson before a goal by Jack Gerlack tied the score with 5:34 to play. Carson added his final goal with 3:23 to play to put the Thunder in a one-goal hole heading to the final minutes.
Carlquist had the answer to force OT, using a nifty over-the-shoulder shot to knot the score at six-apiece.
The two teams battled scoreless in the first OT, before Librock's tally sent the Yellow Jackets home with the win.
Trine opens MIAA play next Tuesday, Mar. 31 at Olivet. Face-off is set for 7 p.m.
