ADRIAN, Mich.-- The Trine men's lacrosse team wrapped up the 2015 campaign with a 14-9 loss to Adrian in MIAA-action Wednesday night at Docking Stadium.
The Bulldogs outscored the Thunder in the first three quarters. Four Adrian players notched four or more points on the night, led by Doug Boyd and Mitch Burgin's five points. Each player scored two goals and dished out three assists. Chris Ward (Oak Lawn, Ill./St. Rita) scored three goals, while Paul Carlquist (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) added a goal and two assists for a three-point night for the Thunder. Trine concluded the season 3-9 overall, with a 1-5 mark in MIAA play. Adrian improved to 10-4 overall, 5-1 in conference play.
Jake Ahearn (Naperville, Ill./Naperville) notched his second two-goal effort of the season. Andrew Walters (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit), Nick Maher (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) and G.T. Youpel (Chicago Ridge, Ill./St. Rita) added single tallies for the Thunder.
Luke Bill scored a game-high four goals as part of the Adrian attack. A.J. Smith added a four-point night with two goals and a pair of assists. The Bulldogs outshout Trine by a 40-32 margin, including 36-20 over the first three quarters. Adrian tallied 30 ground balls to 19 for the Thunder.
Ward scored two of Trine's first three goals to keep the Thunder in the game early. His first goal, on a shot from the far right wing, cut an early Trine deficit to 2-1.
Early in the second quarter, Youpel scored from the left wing off a feed from Carlquist to break up a two-goal run by the Bulldogs. Ward followed just 22 seconds later with another goal from the right wing to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Ward's final goal came midway through the second quarter and cut the score to 6-4. Following the night's action, Ward is tied for the MIAA lead in scoring in conference games. Ward scored 18 goals in league play this season.
The Bulldogs then took over, scoring seven of the next eight goals in the contest to open up a 13-5 lead with 6:18 to play in the third quarter. Bill scored all four of his goals during that stretch, including three in a row to cap a four-goal run. A goal by Carlquist broke up the Adrian.
Trine got fourth-quarter goals from Walters, Maher and Ahearn notched the final three goals of the contest. Brandon Walters (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) picked up the assist on Andrew Walters' goal.
Jordan Backer (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) caused one turnover to bring his season-total to 14 in conference games. That mark leads the MIAA, with four teams having one game remaining.
