MLAX Comes Up Short Against MSOE

MLAX Comes Up Short Against MSOE

ANGOLA, IND.  --  Junior Connor Putman (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) scored a pair of goals in a 10-7 loss against the Milwaukee (Wisc.) School of Engineering in a non-conference game at Fred Zollner Stadium.

Putman was one of six Thunder players to score a goal against the Raiders.  Senior Nick Maher (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) led the team in overall points with three on the afternoon with a goal and a pair of assists.  Juniors Eric Peal (Imperial, Mo./Seckman) and Neil Orr (Lombard, Ill./Montini Catholic) both scored a goal and an assist for two points and the duo of sophomore Tyler Klima (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) and senior Jordan Lelito (West Chicago, Ill./West Chicago) both added goals to round out the point scorers.

Sophomore Joseph Steigmeyer (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) played the entire game in net for Trine and made seven saves.  He now has a record of 4-3 for the season.

MSOE (8-1) struck first with a goal at the 12:34 mark of the opening quarter.  Trine (5-3) then took the lead with two straight markers, beginning with a goal by Klima that tied the game at 1-1 and was followed by a score by Orr with just over four minutes to go in the period that made the score, 2-1.  Orr's goal would be the final one of the quarter as the Thunder took a slim lead into the second period, 2-1.

In the second, the Raider offense rattled off two straight goals a little over a minute apart to regain the lead, 3-2.  But Putman then tallied his first goal of the game at the 7:32 mark on a man advantage to even the score once again, this time at, 3-3.  The two teams then traded goals to end the scoring in the half with Trine's goal coming from Maher on another man-up opportunity to make it a 4-4 game at halftime.

The visitors regained control with the only points scored in the third quarter.  The Raiders tallied goals at the 7:53, 6:20 and 2:43 marks to go up by a score of 7-4 heading into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter began with a goal from Trine's Lelito to get to within a pair of scores, 7-5.  But MSOE answered the score with a goal of its own to extend the margin back to three goals, 8-5, with 10:34 to play in regulation.  Trine looked to mount a late rally as the Thunder scored a pair of goals with under four minutes to go that started with another man-up goal, this time by Peal and Putman's second marker with 2:19 to play that pulled Trine to within a goal, 8-7.

MSOE found the back of the net with an insurance goal at the 1:18 mark and then netted an extra goal with 13 seconds remaining to go on to the 10-7 final.

Trine will next travel to Holland, Mich. for a game against Hope College in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener.  The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
