KALAMAZOO, MICH. -- Junior Neil Orr (Lombard, Ill./Montini Catholic) scored a season and career-tying high four goals in a 14-3 win against Kalamazoo (Mich.) College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association matchup.
For the second straight game, sophomore Justin Gearig (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) scored a total of five points with three goals and a pair of assists. Junior Daniel William Shine (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech College Prep) also scored three goals and tied senior teammate Nick Maher (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) in overall points with four (three goals and an assist). Maher ended the night with a pair of goals and assists.
Junior Conner Putman (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) and freshman Tyler Corless (St. Clair Shores, Mich./De La Salle) also tallied a point in the game with a goal each.
In goal, sophomore Joseph Steigmeyer (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) got the win after 54 minutes of action allowing three goals and had six saves. Freshman Anthony Marasco (Naperville, Ill./Nequa Valley) played the final six minutes and had one save while giving up no goals.
The two teams played a competitive first quarter with Trine (7-5, 2-2 MIAA) holding a slim, 2-1, advantage after the first 15 minutes. Orr scored both of the Thunder goals in the first period starting with a score at the 8:43 mark to make it a 1-0 game. Following a goal by Kalamazoo (2-7, 2-2 MIAA) to even the score at 1-1, Orr struck again with 3:48 to play to give Trine the one goal margin heading into the second frame.
Trine gained some breathing room in the second by scoring four goals with back-to-back-to-back scores to start the period that included two of the three goals coming off the stick of Gearig at the 13:03 and 4:24 marks. Inbetween the two Gearig goals, Shine found the back of the net with just over nine minutes to go in the half. The Hornets tallied their second goal of the game at the 3:36 mark before Shine scored Trine's final goal of the half with 2:08 to go and gave the Thunder a 6-2 lead at halftime.
Offense continued for Trine in the third quarter as the Thunder outscored the Hornets, 5-1, in the period. Orr and Gearig both tallied goals in the period along with Maher, Corless and Putman as Trine lead, 11-3, after 45 minutes of play.
The fourth quarter saw Trine score three times to round out the scoring with Maher, Orr and Shine each scoring their final goals of the game en route to the Thunder posting a 14-3 victory.
Trine will go for a possible third straight win on Saturday, Apr. 21 when the Thunder travel to Olivet, Mich. for a MIAA contest against Olivet College. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
