TIFFIN, Ohio -- The Trine University men's lacrosse team traveled to face Heidelberg University for the opening game of the 2022 season and will return home with a lopsided 13-1 victory.
Junior Andrew Douglas (Liberty Twp., Ohio / Lakota East) got the scoring started for the Thunder in the second minute of play. He would score the goal after receiving a pass from Noah Markus (Woodbury, Minn. / East Ridge). It was the first of many for Douglas who led the team in the contest finishing with five goals.
Douglas would tally his first assist of the night on the next Trine goal which came exactly two minutes after the first. Senior Matt Zanichelli (Rolling Meadows, Ill. / William Fremd) tallied the goal, the first of two in the game. Douglas would also lead the team with five assists.
The final goal of the period came with five minutes remaining in the period, with Markus emerging as the goal scorer. He would finish the game with three goals and three assists second on the team in both categories.
Markus and Douglas would combine for two goals in the second quarter building the team's lead to 5-0 heading into halftime.
In the third quarter the Thunder offense really got going, scoring six goals building a commanding 11-0 lead. Douglas would score three of those goals and Markus would add a fourth. Senior Austin Lindell (Geneva, Ill. / Geneva) would score the first goal of the period, his lone of the night. Sophomore Collin Custer (Spanaway, Wash. / Bethel) would finish the period with his goal.
The final quarter saw Zanichelli open with a goal in the first minute, before the two teams fell into a rhythm of back and forth. The final goals of the game came in the final minute. Sophomore Aiden Theobald (Waveland, Miss. / St. Stanislaus) finished off the scoring for Trine before the Student Princes scored their lone goal with just one second remaining in the contest.
Defensively a pair of Thunder led the way. Senior Dave Keptner (Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow) anchored the defense from the field. He led the team with six groundballs while tying with a team high three caused turnovers.
In net, senior Anthony Marasco (Naperville, Ill. / Nequa Valley) received the start. He held the game scoreless through the first half, recording two saves, two groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Sophomore Nick DiPaolo (Flemington, N.J. / Immaculate) played the majority of the second half in goal and finished with a team high six saves, also holding the opposition scoreless.
Starting the season 1-0, the Thunder will remain on the road for their next contest of the season. They will travel to Monmouth (Ill.) College for a 12 p.m. CST contest on Tuesday, March 8.
