ALMA, Mich.-- A second half goal was the difference as the Trine men's soccer team fell to Alma, 1-0 in MIAA-action Tuesday afternoon at Scotland Yard.
Zach Vanderveer scored 18:11 into the second half to provide the only scoring of the match. Aaron Bender and Austin Gabris were credited with assists on the tally. Nick Strait made three saves in net to earn the shutout for the Scots. Ian Jindrich (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) stopped five shots for the Thunder. Trine fell to 5-7-1 overall and 2-5 in the MIAA. Alma improved to 8-3 overall, 5-2 in conference matches.
The Thunder looked as if they were going to be able to take control of the action early as they got off seven of the first eight shots of the contest. Only one of those shots got on net however, which Strait was able to turn aside.
Trine also had an opportunity early in the second half, but Ben Moricz's (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler) shot rang off the post.
Vanderveer broke the scoreless tie off passes from Bender and Gabris. The goal was Vanderveer's third of the season, all of which have been game-winners.
The two teams finished at an even 17-17 in shots. Trine produced nine corner kick attempts to Alma's six.
The Thunder return to action this Saturday when they face nationally-ranked Calvin at noon at Weaver Field. The match is a part of Trine's Homecoming weekend festivities. CLICK HERE for a full schedule of homecoming events.
