GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. -- The Trine University men's soccer team traveled to Grand Rapids, Mich. to take on No. 2 nationally-ranked Calvin (Mich.) College, but fell to the Knights, 6-1, in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) action.
Calvin (12-0, 8-0 MIAA) took shots early and often to begin the game. Following back-to-back saves by Trine's Connor Werschem (Muskegon, Mich./Fruitport), the Knights broke through at the 13:32 mark to take a 1-0 lead.
The first shot taken by Trine (5-3-3, 3-3-2 MIAA) came during the 29th minute by junior Kurt Wysocki (Avon, Ohio/St. Edward) on a breakaway who capitalized on the opportunity putting the shot attempt past the Calvin netminder to even the score at 1-1. Freshman Tristen Ortiz (Wayland, Mich./Wayland) was credited with the helper on the goal, his first of the season.
Neither team could net the go-ahead goal in the final minutes of the opening period, keeping the game deadlocked at 1-1 at halftime.
The second half saw an offensive explosion by Calvin as the Knights scored five goals on 14 shots. Calvin struck early in the frame with what would turn out to be the game-winner at the 52:39 mark to take a 2-1 advantage.
The remaining four goals scored by Calvin all came in the last 10 minutes with markers during the 83rd, 84th, 88th and 90th minutes as the Knights went on to the 6-1 final.
Werschem played the entire game in net for Trine and had a total of 10 saves on 16 shots faced.
The Thunder return home to face Albion (Mich.) College in a MIAA game at the Weaver Soccer Field on Wednesday, Oct. 11. The game is slated to kick-off at 4 p.m.
