FREELAND, Mich. -- After the Trine University men's soccer team won their first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) title on Saturday, and with that have received both the offensive and defensive MIAA Men's Soccer Athlete of the Week awards.
Forward Tyler Murphy [Greenfield, Ind. / Greenfield Central] was the recipient of the Offensive Athlete of the Week award and junior defender Colin Nicoski [Plainfield, Ill. / Plainfield East] was tabbed Defensive Athlete of the Week. It is the second consecutive week that the pair has been honored by the MIAA.
In the MIAA Semifinal Round at Calvin University, Murphy netted the game-winning goal in the final minute of the first overtime period to secure a spot in the MIAA Final versus Kalamazoo College. He took a team-high five shots in the Calvin match. Against the Hornets, Murphy scored in the 51st minute to give the Thunder a 1-0 advantage, his 17th goal of the season, and helped clinch the team's first league championship.
Trine has held opponents scoreless for 292 consecutive minutes, dating back to the regular season finale at Alma College. Nicoski has been a large part of that achievement on the defensive line. In both the Calvin and Kalamazoo matches, the Thunder were outshot, but Nicoski and the defense preserved the clean sheet in both contests. After going up 1-0, Trine faced 10 Kalamazoo shots and all of them were turned away.
Trine men's soccer will face Otterbein College in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship Tournament. More information on that match will be announced in the coming days.
