HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – Aidan McGonagle, a junior goalkeeper on the Trine University men's soccer team, received the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Men's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week award.
The Monument, Colorado native and transfer from Hesston College has anchored the back of the Trine defense all season long and was a major factor in a pair of shutout victories this week on the pitch. The Thunder have now won five consecutive matches and have allowed just one goal in their last four.
In the 1-0 win at Bluffton University, McGonagle was able to get a touch on seven first half shots by the Beavers to keep the match scoreless at halftime. The offense finally came through for the game-winner in the 67th minute while McGonagle and the rest of the defense preserved the clean sheet. He also received the win in net for his efforts against Manchester University on Saturday. The Thunder dominated that one 5-0 and McGonagle was relieved in the 69th minute of play with the match well in hand.
This season, McGonagle has been a part of three shutouts (two solo) and has made 17 saves on 21 shots on goal (.810 save percentage, 0.69 goals allowed on average).
Trine hits the road for two non-conference matches this week, the first coming on Tuesday, September 20 at DePauw University beginning at 7 pm.
