ANGOLA, Ind.-- The Trine men's tennis team extended its winning streak to six with a 5-4 victory over Hope in the MIAA-opener Wednesday afternoon at Angola Middle School.
The six-match winning streak is the longest for the Thunder men in the Division III era, which dates to the 2004-05 season. Caleb Knust (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) earned his 44th career victory by scores of 6-2, 6-1 to tie Keith Keggereis (1993-96) for the most singles wins on record in team history. Records on file date back to 1986. The junior has now won six-straight singles matches. Knust also teamed with Nick Cassidy (Archbold, Ohio/Perrysburg) for an 8-4 victory in the no. 1 doubles flight.
Freshmen Brian Zehner (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) and Judson Quinn (Russiaville, Ind./Western) each notched singles victories for the Thunder. Quinn's victory was his sixth-straight and brought his overall record to 8-3 in his debut season. Zehner has now won four-straight singles matches and is 6-4 overall. Zehner's victory came in the no. 4 court, while Quinn earned the victory in the no. 5 flight.
Zehner also combined with Spenser Gilbert (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) on a key doubles victory in the no. 3 flight. The duo earned an 8-2 victory to improve to 9-2 as a pairing this season.
The victories improve Trine's record to 8-4 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA. Hope falls to 2-10 overall, 0-1 in conference matches.
The Thunder return to action Tuesday, Apr. 7 at Kalamazoo. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
