ADRIAN, MICH. -- Three competitors claimed individual titles as the Trine University men's outdoor track & field team finished as runners-up in the 2018 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships.
Trine finished with a team score of 123.5 points to place second of seven teams. Calvin (Mich.) College finished as team champions with 214 points and Albion (Mich.) College was third with 116.5 points.
Barnett added to his MIAA title yesterday in the long jump with another conference title, but this time on the track in the 200-meter dash where he posted a mark of 22.29 seconds to take top honors. Junior Jasper Bassett (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) also competed in the 200m and scored points with a seventh-place finish in a time of 23.65 seconds.
Barnett also competed in the 100-meter dash and placed third overall with a mark of 11.10 seconds. Senior Patrick Richardville (Leo, Ind./Leo) also competed in the finals of the 100m and ran a time of 13.10 seconds to finish eighth.
Bassett went on to run in the finals of the 400-meter dash and crossed the finish line in fourth place after turning in a time of 50.01 seconds.
Senior Paul Baker (Columbus, Ind./Columbus East) advanced to today's finals in the 800-meter run and completed the event in a time of 1:57.87 to place third. Junior Nicholas Zak (Saint John, Ind./Hanover Central) also ran in the 800m and placed sixth in a time of 2:00.04.
Other top finishes in the running events included a pair of top-five times in the 1500-meter run with freshman Derek Miller (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview) finishing fourth with a mark of 4:09.80 and fellow freshman Levi Neuzerling (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) crossed the line in fifth with a time of 4:10.50.
Freshman Jack Beakas (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) placed eighth in the 5000-meter run after running a time of 15:58.80.
Junior Kody Snyder rounded out the scoring times of the day with a fifth-place effort in the 3000-meter steeplechase following a time of 10:13.15.
The Thunder also had a top-five showing in the 4x400-meter relay. The team of Richardville, Barnett, Bassett and freshman Logan Deel (Bryan, Ohio/Bryan) posted a combined time of 3:26.23 to finish fourth overall.
In the field events, the Thunder recorded a one-two finish in the hammer throw with Gerber taking the conference title with a best throw of 169' 3.00" (51.60 meters). Junior Mitchell Martin (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) came in as the runner-up with a toss of 168' 10.00" (51.46 meters).
In a schedule change, the men's pole vault also competed on the final day and junior Ryan Haarer (Goshen, Ind./Northridge) captured his second outdoor pole vault championship with a height of 14' 11.00" (4.55 meters). Two other athletes finished in the top eight in the pole vault in junior Jacob Payne (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) and senior Collin Butler (Spring Lake, Mich./Fruitport). Both competitors finished back-to-back with Payne placing fourth with a height of 14' 3.25" (4.35 meters) and Butler placing fifth in a height of 13' 11.25" (4.25 meters).
Barnett competed in the triple jump and had the best overall finish for Trine at fourth place with a leap of 43' 4.25" (13.21 meters).
