ANGOLA, Ind.-- The Trine softball team will host a NCAA® Division III Softball Regional Championship.
The NCAA® Division III Angola Regional Championship will be held Thursday, May 12 through Saturday, May 14 at SportONE/Parkview Softball Field. The Thunder will face Greenville in the opening round of the tournament Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The Panthers won the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Softball Tournament to earn the league's automatic-qualifying bid. Trine received one of 19 at-large bids in the 62-team field after tying for a fifth-straight MIAA Championship.
The Angola Regional also includes No. 2 seed University of Chicago and No. 3 seed Wheaton College. Chicago concluded the regular-season with an overall record of 25-8. Wheaton earned an automatic bid by winning its first-ever College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Tournament. These two teams will open the Regional at 1 p.m.
This will be the ninth-consecutive season the Thunder have earned a bid to the NCAA Regionals. Trine has won one Regional title, which came in 2014. This is the third time the University has hosted an NCAA Regional, though it will be the first ever hosted in SportONE/Parkview Softball Field.
The Regional champion advances to the best-of-three Super Regional at a yet-to-be-determined site. The winner of the Angola Regional will face the winner of the regional being hosted by Lake Forest. That regional is made up of St. Thomas, Wisconsin-Whitewater, Lake Forest and Aurora.
