FREELAND, Mich. -- Trine's Carly Bachna was named the MIAA Softball Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Bachna (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria) was not retired at the plate as she batted a perfect 1.000 with six hits on the week. In an 11-3 victory over Anderson (Ind.) Friday, Bachna belted her first career grand slam, knocked in five runs and scored two runs in a three-hit effort. The freshman added three hits, including a double, and the game-tying RBI in a 2-1 victory in game two. This is the first time Bachna has won MIAA honors in her career.
The perfect performance at the plate lifted Bachna's batting average to a team-leading .452, which ranks fourth in the MIAA. Bachna is tied for the team lead with 22 RBIs, second in the conference. She also ranks second in the conference in home runs with six, trailing only teammates Kaylee Fox (Vermilion, Ohio / Edison) and Makenna Hartline (Niles, Mich. / Brandywine), who each have seven.
Bachna owns a five-game hitting streak and has at least one hit in all but three of the team's 18 games this season. She is batting .611 with a homer and eight RBIs during her current hitting streak.
Trine swept Anderson in the home opener Saturday to remain unbeaten at 18-0. The start is the team's best in program history. The Thunder own wins over two currently ranked teams and three other teams receiving votes in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 poll.
Trine hosts Ohio Northern Wednesday, Mar. 29 at 3:30 p.m. at SportONE/Parkview Softball Field.
