TUCSON, ARIZ. -- The Trine University softball team began the second half of their spring break schedule with a pair of double-digit victories, yesterday.
The Thunder started the day with a contest against Coe College. After a scoreless first inning, the Kohawks came out to a 2-0 lead after the top half of the second inning. It would be their lone lead of the game, as the Thunder came roaring back with six runs in the second, three runs in the third and seven runs in the fourth to take the game 16-2.
Freshman Kennedy Baugh (Walton, Ky. / Notre Dame Academy) led the team offensively with five RBIs three coming on a home run in the fourth inning. Senior Erica Robles (Long Beach, Calif. / Lakewood) also recorded a homer in the contest and came in second with four RBIs in the game. Sophomore Danielle Ray (Hamilton, Ohio / Badin) picked up the win on the mound allowing just two runs in her four innings pitched.
Trine finished off their day facing off with Northland College and picked up right where they left off in the first game scoring five runs in the bottom of the first to take the early 5-1 lead. They would never relinquish it and the game ended after the top of the fifth with the Thunder winning 26-4.
Offensively, everyone got in on the action with the all of the starting lineup coming away with at least one hit. Sophomore Makenna Hartline (Niles, Mich. / Brandywine) led the way for the Thunder finishing the game with a four-bagger and five RBIs while going four for four at the plate. Both senior Kaylee Fox (Vermilion, Ohio / Edison) and freshman Bailey Vande Giessen (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Central) came away with four RBIs.
On the mound, junior Kate Saupe (Farwell, Mich. / Farwell) picked up another win for the season pitching four innings with only two runs allowed.
The Thunder continue play in Arizona today, March 7, with contests against Hiram College and the College of Saint Benedict.
