ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University softball team won two games over visiting Adrian College to start the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) season perfect.
The first half of the doubleheader quickly turned into a pitcher's duel, with both teams combining for just one run in the contest. That run came on a single swing of the bat in the bottom of the second when Thunder senior Lainey McCue (Westlake, Ohio / Westlake) sent a towering fly ball over the fence in left center.
Junior Hannah Kampmann (St. Paul, Minn. / Cretin Derham Hall) pitched a masterful game in the circle taking a no-hitter into the top of the fourth. She would finish the game allowing just two hits and no walks while striking out seven. She improves her record to 5-1 following the win.
In the second game, the Thunder bats got hot as they posted seven runs on the back of two homers and five doubles two come away with the 7-1 victory.
Sophomore Mercede Daugherty (Watervilet, Mich. / Watervilet) led the way for the team going three-for-four with two doubles and one of the team's home runs, finishing with two RBIs.
Sophomore Haley Springer (Crestwood, Ky. / Oldham County) and McCue also finished with two RBIs each as they both went two-for-four. Junior Michaela Hartline (Niles, Mich. / Brandywine) picked up the team's other home run in the game.
In the circle, senior Kate Saupe (Farwell, Mich. / Farwell) turned in a solid performance allowing just the lone run. She gave up six hits, but no walks and added two strikeouts to pick up her eighth straight win of the season.
Trine improves to 14-2 overall and 2-0 in MIAA play following the pair of wins. They will hit the diamond again tomorrow, April 3, as they make up their doubleheader against Saint Mary's College which was originally scheduled for last weekend. The MIAA doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
