ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University softball team will play host to Case Western Reserve University during the 2022 NCAA Division III Softball Championship Angola, Ind. Super Regional beginning on Friday, May 20.
The event is a best of three series between the two teams. The first day of competition will include one game at 2 p.m. on Friday. The series is scheduled to finish up on Saturday, May 21 when the two teams face off at 1 p.m. for game two followed by a game three if necessary. The Spartans enter the weekend with a record of 30-10, earning their spot after winning the Cleveland Regional last weekend. CWRU opened the double-elimination tournament with a 2-1 extra-inning win over The College of New Jersey. The Spartans fell to top-seeded Concordia University Wisconsin on the second day but defeated TCNJ 2-1 in the nightcap to advance to the regional final. Needing two wins on the final day to advance, Case Western Reserve avenged its loss to Concordia in the opener with a 6-4 extra-inning victory and won the second game 7-2 to clinch the regional.
This is the second time the program has reached the super regional round. The first came in 2018 when they defeated Hope College to advance to the NCAA Championship where they would eventually finish fifth in the country.
The Thunder enter the weekend with a record of 30-11, after sweeping their way through the Angola, Ind. Regional last weekend. The team won their opening game over Wisconsin-Eau Claire by the score of 3-0, before advancing to the championship game with an 8-4 victory over second-seeded North Central (Ill.) College. The team would then secure their spot in the super regional with a 6-0 win in a rematch with the Cardinals.
This is the season marks the fifth time the team will play in the super regional round. They are currently 6-2 in games winning three out of four previous trips to the round. Their last trip was a sweep of SUNY Geneseo in 2019. They would follow up with their most successful trip to the National Championships when they won a pair of games to finish tied for third in the country.
