FREELAND, Mich.-- Trine's Whitney Shaffer has been named to the 2015 All-MIAA women's basketball team, which was released Tuesday.
Shaffer (Tipton, Ind./Tri-Central) was named to the All-MIAA Second Team after leading the Thunder in scoring in her first season as a member of the team. The junior averaged 11.6 points per game on the season. She is being honored on the all-conference teams for the first time in her career. Trine concluded Ryan Gould's first season as head coach 15-10 overall- the highest win total for any Trine team since 2002-03 and a nine-win improvement from the 2013-14 campaign. The Thunder tied for fourth in the MIAA with a 9-7 league mark.
Shaffer shot 41.5 percent from three-point range this season, a mark that ranked third in the MIAA and 21st overall in the nation. The guard averaged 2.2 made threes per game to rank second in the conference. Her 56 made threes this season were the third-highest in a single-season in team history.
Among Shaffer's highlights this season were three efforts of 20 or more points. She scored a career-high 23 points in a key 68-66 victory over Adrian late in the season. Shaffer finished the season strong, scoring in double-figures in each of Trine's final seven games.
