Thunder Rally in Second Half to Beat Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH.  --  After trailing by five points at halftime, the Trine University women's basketball team outscored Calvin (Mich.) College, 39-22, in the second half to come away with a 62-50 victory in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association game in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The Thunder improve to 8-1 overall this season with the win and have now won their last six games.  Trine also remains unbeaten in MIAA play with a 3-0 mark.

Trine had three players score in double figures with senior Montana Martin (Columbia City, Ind./Churubusco) leading the way with a team-high 14 points on four-of-12 shooting (33.0 percent).  Senior Cassidy Williams (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold) was second with 13 points and senior Brandi Dawson (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) was third with 12 points.  In addition, Dawson and junior Katy Steers (Portage, Ind./Portage) both grabbed a team-best six rebounds.

Calvin (4-4, 1-1 MIAA) scored first, but Trine answered with eight straight points that included a layup by Dawson that gave the Thunder a six-point edge, 8-2, at the 7:45 mark.  The Knights responded with a scoring run of their own and pulled to within a point, 8-7, with 6:20 to go in the first quarter.  Trine never surrendered the lead and maintained a two-point edge when the clock expired, 18-16.

Trine increased its lead to seven points, 23-16, in the early minutes of the second quarter, but those were the final points the Thunder scored the remainder of the half as Calvin went on a 12-0 run to end the period and boast a 28-23 margin at the break.

Dawson began the scoring in the second half with a layup which sparked an 8-0 run to put Trine back on top, 31-28, with 7:38 remaining in the third quarter.  Calvin later regained the lead, 32-31, and the two teams eventually battled to a 34-34 tie with 1:41 to go.  A triple by freshman Sophia Kreag (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) and a pair of free-throws by sophomore Paige Reid (Grand Blanc, Mich./Holly) rounded out the scoring and sent the Thunder into the final quarter, leading, 39-34.

In the fourth quarter, Trine continued its run and quickly jumped out a 13-point margin, 49-36, with 7:34 left to play.  The Knights pulled to within seven points with under three minutes to go when a layup by Williams off of a turnover sparked a 7-0 run and sealed the victory for Trine with a 14-point lead, 62-48, with just over a minute remaining.  Calvin scored the final points of the game on a jumper with four seconds left, but Trine would go on to claim the 62-50 win.

Trine will next travel to Defiance, Ohio for a non-conference game against Defiance College on Wednesday, Dec. 19.  The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
