BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – The Trine University women's golf team was in action on Friday for round one of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Fall Championship. The Thunder scored a sixth-place finish at Bedford Valley Country Club at 348 strokes.
Adrian College continued to build upon their lead in the MIAA standings with a team score of 323. Unfortunately, Trine dropped to sixth on the league table and need to gain three strokes on Saint Mary's College and nine strokes on Calvin University in Saturday's conference championship round in order to qualify for the MIAA Automatic Qualifier event in the spring.
Grace Dubec was the lowest scorer for the Thunder with an 85. The lone birdie in her round came on the par-4 third hole. As it stands, Dubec is tied for 10th and would qualify for All-MIAA honors, but cannot lose a spot in Saturday's final conference round.
Calley Ruff had a standout performance for the team with an 86, good for second on the Trine roster. She tied with Dubec and Máire Sullivan with six pars on her scorecard. Sullivan finished one back of the freshman Ruff with a score of 87.
A 90 by Reagan Guthrie would complete the countable scores for the Thunder on Friday. Bailey Bravata had a 96 as the fifth member of the team. Each of them had a birdie, with Guthrie's coming on hole 15 and Bravata's on the front nine (hole six). Competing as an individual, Caroline Boyd completed her 18 holes at 92.
Saturday, October 8 is the last round of the fall for the women's golf team when they have another chance to improve their scores at Bedford Valley Country Club.
