DULUTH, Minn. -- The Trine University women's hockey team found a way to return home with a point, coming up with a 1-1 tie today against the College of St. Scholastica.
The Saints scored the first goal of the contest in the second period to take the 1-0 lead. They would hold that lead through the rest of that period and the first 13 minutes of the third.
In the fourteenth minute of the final period, junior Kirsten Vandeheuvel (Denfield, Ontario) fired a shot on goal that was turned aside. Senior Sydney Hernalsteen (Macomb, Mich.) came up with the rebound and put it away for the goal.
The 1-1 score would hold through the rest of regulation and through the overtime period to become the final.
In net for Trine, senior Molly Scarborough (Ramsey, Minn.) finished the game with 27 crucial saves to lead the team to the tie.
The Thunder improve to 7-6-4 overall and 3-5-2 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association following the tie. They return home to face Aurora University on Friday, Jan. 31. The game which is the team's annual "Pink the Rink" event is set to kick off at 7 p.m.
