ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University women's hockey sent their seniors off in style with a 4-2 victory over visiting Finlandia University.
The Thunder struck first in the contest when at the 17-minute mark of the first period sophomore Natasha Strbiak (Renton, Wash.) came up with her second goal of the season. Senior Sydney Hernalsteen (Macomb, Mich.) and freshman Gabrielle Hicks (Roy, Utah) added assists on the tally.
It looked like Trine would take the 1-0 lead into the first intermission but with 27 seconds left in the period the Lions responded with a goal of their own and the team would be tied at one to start the second period.
Trine came up with a quick goal to start the period. This time junior Eryn Isaacson (Fenton, Mich.) came up with her team-high tenth goal of the season. Hernalsteen once again added an assist along with classmate Bailey Goodwin (Fort Wayne, Ind.).
Just two minutes later Finlandia once again tied the game with a goal of their own.
This time the Thunder responded well before the intermission. In the fifth minute of the period, Hernalsteen brought the puck into the offensive end and fired off a shot on goal. The puck was turned aside but left close to the net where freshman Sara Martino (Arlington Heights, Ill.) passed in just outside of the crease to Strbiak who came up with her second goal of the evening.
Trine went on to add an insurance goal in the sixth minute of the final period. Junior Emily Moore (London, Ontario) scored the tally with classmates Kailey Cameron (Nowthen, Minn.) and Kirsten Vandenheuvel (Denton, Ontario) adding assists.
The 4-2 lead would be enough and the Thunder picked up the victory. In net senior Molly Scarborough (Ramsey, Minn.) picked up the win with 18 saves.
Trine improves to 8-10-4 overall and 4-9-2 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. They will finish off the season with another game against Finlandia tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 22. Opening puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m.
