KALAMAZOO, Mich.-- The Trine women's lacrosse team was defeated by Kalamazoo 12-2 in MIAA-action Wednesday night at Angell Field.
The Hornets never trailed as they scored the first three goals, which proved too much for the Thunder to overcome. Anika Sproull and Alivia DuQuet each scored four times to pace Kalamazoo. Freshmen Rebecca Plantz (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) and Nikkolette Makaryk (Joliet, Ill./Minooka Community) each scored goals for Trine. The Thunder fell to 3-4 overall, 0-3 in the MIAA. The Hornets improved to 4-3 and are 2-0 in conference play.
Kalamazoo goalie Katie Johnson was able to keep Trine off the board for most of the night. The MIAA-leader in save percentage turned away nine of 11 shots on goal to earn the victory.
Hunter Johnson (Millbury, Ohio/Lake) added an assist for the Thunder. Taylor Gast (Akron, Ind./Tippecanoe Valley) won two draw controls. Grace Garrett (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) made four saves in net.
Sproull scored the first two goals and assisted on the third as Kalamazoo took a 3-0 lead in the first five minutes. Makaryk notched her fourth goals of the season at the 21:19 mark to break up the run.
DuQuet and Sproull combined for the next three goals before Plantz scored off a pass from Johnson to cut the score to 6-2 with 5:06 remaining in the first half. The Hornets scored the final six tallies of the contest to pull away and earn the victory.
Trine will host St. Mary's this Saturday, Apr. 11 at 1 p.m. in Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium.
