ALBION, Mich. -- The Trine University women's lacrosse team took a one-goal lead into the intermission but couldn't withstand a second-half comeback from their hosts from Albion College dropping the contest 18-11.
The Britons came up with the first two goals of the game over the course of the first ten minutes of play.
Finally, with just under twenty minutes remaining in the half, the Thunder offense found purchase scoring two goals within 11 seconds of each other to tie the game. Freshmen Alyssa Keptner (Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow) and Danielle Gargiulo (Downers Grove, Ill. / Downers Grove) accounted for the goals.
Two and a half minutes later, sophomore Ella Dougherty (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) gave the team their first lead of the game at 3-2. Albion returned fire following the goal retaking the lead with a pair of goals at 4-3.
Three more Thunder responded with a goal apiece to take the largest lead of the game for the team at 6-4. Seniors Kristen Nguyen (Locust Grove, Ga. / Luella) and Kristin John (South Bend, Ind. / St. Joe's) along with junior Liv Ghent (Byron Center, Mich. / Caledonia) recorded the goals.
Two more goals brought the game back to even before Keptner ended the scoring for the half giving Trine a 7-6 lead heading into the intermission.
Albion stormed back in the second half, scoring the first five goals. They would outscore the Thunder 12-4 in the period to hand Trine the 18-11 loss.
Ghent led the way for the Thunder in the contest finishing the game with three goals and three assists. Nguyen also finished with three goals while John and Dougherty each finished with a goal and two assists.
Senior Emily Morthorst (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Homestead) stuck it out in net for Trine finishing the game with 11 saves and two groundballs.
The Thunder fall to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play following the loss. They will take the field again when they travel to face Adrian College on Saturday, March 27. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
